How I was detained, raped by Libyan officials – Nigerian returnee, Akeamo

A Nigerian returnee from Libya, Bridget Akeamo, on Wednesday narrated her ordeal in the hands of Libyan authorities after she was arrested.

Speaking in Lagos, Akeamo disclosed that she was arrested, detained and raped by Libyan immigration while attempting to cross over to Italy.

Akeamo said the failure to secure a job after her education made her to leave Nigeria last year August.

The returnee disclosed that she travelled to Libya with the hope of crossing to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea in search of greener pasture.

Akeamo, an indigene of Anambra State said she was assisted to embark on the journey by her parents with the hope of securing job abroad.

According to Akeama, “Ever since then, I had been moved from one prison to another until I was taken to detention camp in Tripoli.

“We were subjected to inhuman treatment while in prison, from the food we eat to the water we drink.

“Most of the young ladies in detention camp were raped by Libyan officials and if you refused their advances, it will be hell for you.

“Thank God I am back in Nigeria, I know all hope is not lost but it is painful that I will begin from the scratch again with my unborn child.”

Akeamo was one among many Nigerians who arrived Lagos through the aide of the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, after being detained for several months in Libyan detention facilities.
