Isolo Residents Thrown Into Darkness For Protesting Over Crazy Bill

Residents of Isolo, a suburb of Lagos, western Nigeria, may be in darkness for long as electricity supply to their homes was disconnected after they protested over epileptic power supply and crazy bills.

The business manager, Mr Sunday Oyewole, ordered the immediate disconnection of electricity supply to about 25 streets and Isolo Magistrates’ courts after the youths’ protest.

Mr. Oyewole was said to be angry over the youths’ protest during which they returned all the bills sent to them to his office.

Even the intervention of Magistrates at Isolo courts did not help matters as Oyewole insisted that the residents must come to his office and take the bills they left there and pay every kobo they are owing the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.

He insisted that he would not restore power supply to the affected streets until they comply with his directive.

According to PmNews report, there are more than 25 streets with over 10,000 residents affected.

Some of the affected streets are Aderinto, Lamina, Lawal, Alhaji Ashiriabo, Adesina, Asala and Hassan.

Others are Amodu, Faronnbi, Karimu, Oloruntobi, Aregbe, Adekunle, Olubi, Olushi and many others.

A resident, Kayode Adeniyi said their ordeal started last week after the youths in the area went to Oyewole’s office at Cele area to complain about poor electricity supply and estimated bills.

He said Oyewole did not address their problem which resulted in the youths collecting all the bills available in the area and dumping them in Oyewole’s office.

He said after Oyewole ordered his men to disconnect electricity supply to the affected streets, they went to his office along with some elders but he practically walked them out of his office.

Adeniyi said Oyewole said the residents are owing millions of naira and as such, they will remain in darkness until they pay every kobo because of the conduct of the youths.

When our correspondent contacted Oyewole for his comment, he switched off his phone.

At the time of filing this report, the affected streets and the courts were still in darkness.
