A decision by the Court of Arbitration for sport reduced the length of the Frenchman’s ban from six years to four years, but crucially the ban remains in place leaving his position untenable having being suspended from the sport.
The 1984 European Championship winner Platini, 60, said he was resigning from his position after he and former FIFA president Sepp Blatter were found guilty of breaching ethics over an exchange of payment apparently worth £1.25m, a sum Blatter paid to Platini for work undertaken between 1998 and 2002.

Both men denied any wrongdoing, but Platini took his case to the CAS after the FIFA appeals committee had reduced both bans from eight years to six years.
