It continues to be a year to forget for Neymar after the Barcelona star was a notable omission from the shortlist for UEFA’s Best Player in Europe award.

Real Madrid dominate proceedings for the accolade with Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos and Pepe providing the highest club representation.Only two thirds of the Camp Nou’s MSN triumvirate were included in the list compiled by votes from European media, including MARCA, as Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi made the cut for the reigning La Liga champions.

Also making the cut were Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and the Bayern Munich duo of Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer.Neymar’s placed outside the top 10 was not the only surprise as Will Grigg, who failed to make a solitary outing in Northern Ireland’s entire Euro 2016 campaign, was ranked joint 25th alongside Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.UEFA will reduce the shortlist to three contenders on August 5 before announcing the winner at the Champions League’s group stage draw on August 26.
