Pensioner in court for unlawful entry

A 60-year-old pensioner, Emmanuel Effiong, on Tuesday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrate court for alleged unlawful entering into the arrival lobby of Murtala Mohammed International Airport terminal.

Effiong, a resident of Abule-Egbe, Ikeja Area, Lagos, is being tried for breach of peace and unlawful entering.

Prosecutor Essien Ndarake told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 18 at the arrival hall of Muritala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
He said that the accused unlawfully entered into the airport which was a restricted area without any reasonable cause or permission.

“The accused was found inside the airport lobby without permission or authority from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN),” he said.
Ndarake said that the accused engaged himself as a tout by rending unsolicited assistance to both intending and arriving passengers without permission.

“The accused was found seeking unsolicited assistance from passengers. When he was accosted and asked about his mission, he started making noise and disturbing the peace of passengers,” he said.

The offences contravened sections 166 and 310 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which provides three-year imprisonment for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs. E. Kubeinje, adjourned the case till Nov. 10 for mention.
