Protest as soldier kills bus driver

Nigerian-Soldiers
Spontaneous protest by commercial bus Drivers and touts was triggered in Rumuokoro axis of the Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers state on Sunday over an alleged shooting to death of a commuter bus driver by a soldier from Port Harcourt Barracks of the Nigerian Army.

The incident happened around the busy Rumuokoro round-about in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered the deceased bus driver was said to be driving against traffic at about 2pm in the direction of Rumuokoro roundabout to beat traffic gridlock when he was ordered to stop by soldiers at the Rumuokoro axis of Bori Camp gate of the Army barracks.
Angered by the behaviour of the driver, the soldier allegedly opened fire on the driver and killed him on the spot.
The incident caused anger among taxi and commuter bus drivers who went on the rampage.
According to pmnewsnigeria, pedestrians and motorists scampered for safety, while those who reside around Rumuodamaya, Rumuokoro, Eligbolo and Rukpowu who had not returned home from churches before the incident, were caught in the confusion while trying to escape from the riot.
Bus conductors and sympathizers erected barricades and smashing the windscreens of vehicles.
It was later gathered that the shot driver was Michael Nweye, and was in his early 20s and hailed from Egbeda community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.
A family member, Chinedu Okedi in his narrative said the alleged trigger-happy soldier would not go unpunished.
Okedi explained: “He was taking one way as usual, as they used to do in that Rumuokoro. So, the soldier chased him and blocked him. He asked him to come down from the vehicle but the boy refused.
“And as he was picking passengers the soldier shot him. The elder brother to the boy has said that the family will institute a case against the soldier who killed him.”
His body has since been deposited in the mortuary.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Port Harcourt Barracks of the Nigerian Army could not be contacted for confirmation.

When the state Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, was contacted, she confirmed the incident, saying investigation was ongoing to ascertain the identity of the culprit.
A similar incident occurred on Friday, 7 August at Wimpey Junction, along Ikwerre Road when a policeman on stop-and-search duty from Kala Police Station, Rumueprikom shot and killed a bus driver, David Legbara, over N100 bribe.
The late Legbara, an Ogoni man from Uegewe-Boue in Tai LGA of Rivers state was the only son and the bread winner of his family, who recently got married.
His wife was eight months pregnant when the policeman shot him dead.
The killing sparked off protest from other commercial drivers, conductors and sympathisers, who saw the action of the policeman as unjustifiable.
