Rights group wants fresh autopsy on LUTH doctor

A human rights group, Project Alert on Violence against Women, has called for a fresh and independent autopsy on the remains of a consultant paediatric surgeon at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Hestiana Idiodi-Thomas, whose death has been shrouded in mystery.

It was reported that Hestiana, who had suffered a fatal head injury, was rushed to LUTH on Wednesday by her husband, Dr. Babafemi Thomas, a consultant clinical pathologist and one-time chairman of the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association.

Dr. Hestiana, a mother of two, was declared dead on arrival. Her death had, however, sparked off outrage on social media, with many attributing her demise to domestic violence.

The rights group, in a statement by its Executive Director, Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, on Wednesday, expressed concern over the mysterious death and demanded that a competent and independent team of medical experts performed a forensic autopsy on the late doctor.

The group said, “Of particular worry and concern to Project Alert are the premature comments being attributed to the Medical Women Association, and Thomas family without an autopsy being done. There have been comments such as she was a psychiatric patient, she killed herself and she jumped from their first floor apartment.

“Such comments are inappropriate, and may be interpreted to mean that attempts are being made to pre-empt the result of the autopsy when it is eventually carried out.

“We will like to warn that such statements being attributed to the Medical Women Association and the NMA could land LUTH in a lot of lawsuits with regard to the hospital knowing that Dr. Hestiana was a psychiatric patient and was still allowed to treat and operate sick children.”

Project Alert commended the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team of Lagos State for intervening and called for expedited and unbiased autopsy on late Hestiana to establish the real cause of her death.

“We are therefore calling for a thorough investigation into the questionable and violent death of this young female doctor. We are specifically calling for the constitution of an independent group of pathologists, if possible from outside Lagos State, to conduct the autopsy.

“We also want the constitution of a team of medical professionals, women’s groups, DSVRT and the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to work closely with the police to probe this shocking incident,” the group added.
