Solange Stuns On Elle Cover

After being interviewed by her sister Beyoncé for Interview, Solange opens up yet again, this time as the cover star for ELLE’s March issue.

Draped in red from head to toe, the soulful singer sports a bubble coat by Norma Kamali and pants by Pleats Please Issey Miyake on the cover, which was shot by Terry Tsiolis.

Inside, Solange opens up about what it was like to grow up with Queen Bey and her Destiny’s Child bestie, Kelly Rowland.

My sister and Kelly were the same age, which is like a built-in best friend in the house,” Solange said. “They were extremely close…Writing felt like this insular thing that I could go back in my room and express all that I would observe, all the emotions that would arise. It felt like mine, my little thing.”

The younger Knowles sibling also speaks about the forces that allowed her to craft her most-lauded album yet, last year’s A Seat at the Table.

“I did want to create this juxtaposition, politically, of having these very hard, messy conversations but having them stylistically in a way that you can really hear me, and not the yelling, the rage,” she explained. “I wanted to project in my delivery what I was not achieving at all: peace and having a certain lightness and airiness that could maybe help me get closer to having more light and airiness in my life.”

Elsewhere in the mag, Solange talks about raising her son Julez in Moscow, Idaho during her teenage years.

“It was one of the most bittersweet moments of my life,” she said, “because I was so in love with Julez, and having spent a lot of time on the road, I yearned to be in one place, to have the opportunity to really ground myself with him. But it was isolating and lonely, and so cold and dark. And it was just Julez and me most of the time. It was hard to imagine being able to progress in my career in any way.”

On social media, the “Cranes in the Sky” singer thanked ELLE for the spread, which also includes a photo of a pensive Solange, posing in a flowy red outfit.

The March issue of ELLE hits newsstands Feb. 21.
