Top four European Leagues to be given four places in Champions League

UEFA has confirmed that the top four leagues in Europe, will have four guaranteed spots in the Champions League group stage from the 2018/2019 season.

The current top four leagues in the UEFA coefficient ranking are La Liga (Spain), Bundesliga (Germany), Premier League (England) and Serie A (Italy).

This new decision means the clubs that finish in the first four positions in these countries, will automatically qualify for the group stage without any play-offs.

Before now, only La Liga, the Bundesliga and the Premier League were guaranteed three places in the group stage, with a fourth possible through play-offs.

UEFA also confirmed that winners of the Europa League, will automatically qualify for the group stage too.

The revamp will also involve a change to the way in which clubs are paid, with UEFA explaining: “A new four-pillar financial distribution system (starting fee, performance in the competition, individual club coefficient and market pool) will see sporting performances better rewarded, while market pool share will decrease.”
