Barcelona want a defender and De Ligt is the dream

With preparations already well underway for next season, Barcelona wants to add two central defenders to the squad – Eric Garcia and one more – with Matthijs de Ligt being the dream option.

The Blaugrana are close to sealing deals for Eric GarciaSergio AgueroGeorginio Wijnaldum, and Memphis Depay, and they are continuing to work on other possible signings, while they also expect a number of departures.

One of the key areas identified for a new-look Barcelona next season is in central defence, and the Catalan club had initially thought that the arrival of Eric Garcia would be enough.

Now, though, they have changed tact and want to further strengthen the backline with another new face, but it won’t be easy.

De Ligt, who Barcelona tried to sign before he chose Juventus, remains the number one choice, but due to the finances involved bringing him in at this time would be almost impossible.

The other name on the table is Villarreal‘s Pau Torres, who the club have also been following for some time.

However, Pau wouldn’t come cheaply either, especially after such an excellent season with Villarreal and with other teams, including Manchester United, monitoring his situation as well.

If Barcelona want to bring in a quality centre-back, they may have to keep looking as their first choices may not be realistic options this summer.

More exits

With the Blaugrana club looking to freshen up the centre of defence, it is logical that one or two members of the current squad will be heading for the door.

The departure of Samuel Umtiti is all but a certainty, with the club actively shopping the Frenchman.

If the plan is to bring in two, then two will probably have to go, meaning that Umtiti will not be the only one on the way out.

It remains to be seen if the club will retain faith in Clement Lenglet, who came in for much criticism in 2020/21, but Barcelona will certainly listen to offers for the France international.

Another possibility would be letting Oscar Mingueza or Ronald Araujo go, perhaps on loan, but both had good seasons and are in the club’s plans.
