Comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has shared how his father initially resisted his decision to pursue a comedy career.
Speaking in an interview with VJ Adams and monitored by PUNCH Online on Saturday, Sabinus explained that his father wanted him to study law, a plan that never worked out despite several attempts to gain admission.
He eventually enrolled to study Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, where he discovered his flair for comedy and began producing skits.
Sabinus said he kept his comedy journey hidden from his father throughout his university years. It was not until a year after graduating that his father realised what he had been doing, after spotting him on posters for comedy shows.
The discovery, he said, sparked anger. “He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer, Sabinus recounted.
He noted that his father only began to accept his career choice after he started earning from comedy and supporting the family, eventually giving his full blessing as Sabinus’ popularity grew.
Sabinus is a Nigerian comedian who gained fame through short skits shared widely on social media.
Like many young Nigerians pursuing creative careers, he faced parental pressure to follow a more traditional” profession, in his case, Law.
This reflects a broader cultural expectation in Nigeria where parents often encourage careers in fields like law, medicine, or engineering, seen as stable and prestigious.
