UEFA discipline Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus: Champions League participation in danger

UEFA have decided to take disciplinary action against Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus for their part in the failed Super League project.

The Clasico duo and Juventus are the only three clubs yet to distance themselves from the proposed breakaway league, with each of the other nine founding members since going back on their rebellious desires to pull away from UEFA competition.

In a statement on Tuesday, UEFA confirmed that they were taking action against the three clubs.

“Following an investigation conducted by UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project,” the statement began, “disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC for a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework.

“Further information will be made available in due course.”

The process will likely last about a month, after which the sanctions imposed on Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus will be known. The harshest punishment could lead to the expulsion of the three clubs from the Champions League for one or two seasons, in addition to a heavy fine.

Should this happen, LaLiga Santander would keep the four Champions League places it currently holds, with Real Sociedad and Betis replacing Real Madrid and Barcelona in next season’s competition.
