A Nigerian man, Jonathan Biodun, who was imprisoned over a ₦1,137,000 debt, has regained his freedom after social media users came together to settle his financial burden.
The Ray of Hope Prison Outreach shared a heartfelt video on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, where Jonathan expressed his deep gratitude to everyone who contributed to his release.
🔹 How It Started
Jonathan’s case came to light when a group of Twitter influencers visited the Apapa Kirikiri Correctional Centre for a friendly football match with inmates. During the visit, a prisoner discreetly handed a letter to one of the influencers, which was later shared online.
In the letter, Jonathan pleaded for help, saying:
“I don’t have much time to write. Please help me out. I cried online for assistance before being remanded, but someone tagged me a scammer. I’m here because of a ₦1,137,000 debt.”
🔹 Social Media to the Rescue
A Twitter user, Sir Dickson (#Wizarab10), amplified the call for help, stating:
“Nobody should be in prison over a debt. It is not a criminal offence. Imagine rotting in prison because you’re poor.”
A public donation campaign was quickly launched, and within weeks, enough funds were raised to settle his debt and secure his release.
🔹 Jonathan’s Emotional Reaction
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Jonathan shared his joy in a video:
“I have just been released from Apapa Kirikiri Correctional Centre. Thank you to everyone who donated, contributed, or supported me in any way. You have no idea what this freedom means to me.”
