Tear Gas Fired as El-Rufai Supporters Clash with Security at EFCC Headquarters

Tension flared on Monday at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja as a large crowd of supporters for former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, confronted security personnel stationed at the premises.

Eyewitnesses reported that the situation intensified when protesters tried to approach the entrance of the anti-corruption agency. Security operatives responded by releasing tear gas canisters to disperse the gathering and restore order, causing chaos as both protesters and bystanders fled the area.

In footage reviewed by our correspondent, protesters could be heard chanting defiantly, vowing to return. “We will come back; when it clears, we will come back,” some demonstrators shouted, signaling their resolve to continue the protest despite the disruption.

El-Rufai arrived at the EFCC headquarters earlier in the day, accompanied by hundreds of supporters and political allies. His visit followed reports of an alleged attempt to arrest him last Thursday at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, an incident that has stirred public debate and heightened political tension.

As of press time, security remained tight around the EFCC complex, with armed officers closely monitoring all movements in and out of the area to forestall any further disturbances.
