The Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ) has announced a ban on all Burna Boy music following a physical altercation involving the artist and DJ Tunez.
The incident occurred on Monday at Obi’s House, a prominent weekly Afrobeats event in Lagos. What started as a heated argument between Burna Boy and DJ Tunez reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, with members of Burna Boy’s entourage allegedly joining in before bystanders intervened to restore calm.
While the specific cause of the dispute remains unclear, social media users have speculated that longstanding industry rivalries may have played a role, particularly given DJ Tunez’s close association with Wizkid—a frequent subject of fan comparisons with Burna Boy.
In response, the NDJ released a detailed statement on Instagram condemning discrimination and hostility, and urging for unity and respect within the entertainment industry.
No one is born hating another because of skin colour, religion, background, or gender. People simply learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can also be taught to love, since love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite, the statement read.
The association emphasized its commitment to supporting all DJs equally, both in Nigeria and the diaspora, and underscored the importance of upholding universal human rights and dignity within the profession.
Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? Such are the places where every male and female #NDJ seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, and equal dignity without discrimination, irrespective of its source—whether from another NDJ or otherwise. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere, the statement continued.
The NDJ further called on its community to reject prejudice of any kind and to promote freedom and equality for DJs nationwide, noting, “We cannot all succeed when half of us are being held back.
Concluding the statement, the association announced the immediate boycott of Burna Boy’s music across its network pending a thorough investigation into the incident involving DJ Tunez.
Burna Boy’s music is temporarily removed from all our DJs’ playlists until further notice, the NDJ said. Our team will conduct a proper investigation into last night’s incident involving our own, DJ Tunez.
As of the time of this report, Burna Boy has not issued a public statement regarding the altercation.
