Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has paid tribute to the late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, describing his life as a shining example of resilience, creativity, and excellence.
Speaking at the funeral service held on Thursday at Mary Slessor Technical College Ground in Arochukwu Local Government Area, Otti said Ekubo’s remarkable achievements continue to inspire young people across the nation.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, Governor Otti described Ekubo’s passing as a profound loss not only to Abia State but also to Nigeria’s entertainment industry and millions of admirers worldwide.
He emphasized that the late actor was more than just an entertainer—he was a cultural ambassador who proudly showcased the heritage of his state and country on the global stage.
“Alex possessed a rare ability to connect with people through his performances. He brought joy to many homes, inspired countless young people, and showed that with discipline, dedication, and excellence, greatness is attainable.
His journey is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity that define the people of Abia State. He was always proud of his roots and remained closely connected to his homeland,” Otti stated.
The governor acknowledged that Ekubo’s death has left a significant void in the Nigerian creative industry, but expressed confidence that his legacy will continue to inspire generations.
He encouraged the bereaved family, the people of Arochukwu, and members of the entertainment industry to stay strong and find comfort in God during this difficult time.
During the service, Mrs. Eno Jerry-Eze, Resident Pastor of Streams of Joy, Umuahia, delivered a sermon reminding the congregation that nothing happens without God’s knowledge and urging everyone to reflect on their lives.
In her tribute, the late actor’s elder sister, Mrs. Kelechi Ekubo-Otusi, remembered Alex as humble, caring, loving, and God-fearing, noting his devotion to God and humanity.
Alex Ekubo passed away in May at the age of 40 due to complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer. He is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, and other relatives. The funeral drew attendance from top government officials, Nollywood colleagues, and sympathisers from across the country.
