The Delta State Police Command has arrested a motorcycle rider, Kelvin Ogaga, for allegedly kidnapping a three-year-old girl he was hired to transport to and from school, and extorting a N500,000 ransom from her family.
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the arrest in a video shared on X on Thursday. He explained that Ogaga had been contracted to take the child to school and bring her home each day for a monthly fee of N10,000. After about three weeks on the job, Ogaga allegedly diverted from his usual route, abducted the child, and began calling her parents from a different phone number, initially demanding a ransom of N2 million.
Ogaga reportedly switched off his personal phone to avoid suspicion and threatened the family with harm to the child if the police were contacted. Despite this, the family reported the incident, and the ransom was eventually negotiated down to N500,000, which they paid before the child was released unharmed.
The police immediately launched an intelligence-led investigation, resulting in Ogaga’s arrest and the recovery of part of the ransom. During interrogation, Ogaga confessed to the crime, claiming financial hardship and the influence of a friend, identified only as Omo. He also alleged that his girlfriend was aware of and involved in the kidnapping plot.
SP Edafe stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices. He urged parents and guardians to thoroughly vet anyone entrusted with their children’s care or transportation.
“The good part is that the child is safe, the suspect has been arrested, and part of the ransom money has been recovered,” Edafe said.
