The Imo State Police Command has thwarted a suspected armed robbery attempt in Owerri, arresting one suspect and recovering a locally made pistol during an intelligence-driven operation.
According to police spokesperson Henry Okoye, the operation took place early Monday morning at Works Layout, Owerri, after residents provided credible information.
The arrested suspect was identified as Onyegbulam Lucky Boy, a native of Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area and resident of Umuodu, Mbieri.
The joint security operation, which involved police officers, military personnel, and local vigilante members, led to his arrest, while an alleged accomplice, identified only as Chijioke, managed to escape upon spotting the security team.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects had planned a robbery attack on unsuspecting residents before security forces intervened. A locally made pistol, believed to have been intended for the operation, was recovered at the scene, and the arrested suspect is currently in police custody.
The police command stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and other members of the alleged criminal gang.
Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso praised the professionalism of the security operatives and acknowledged the crucial support of the military, vigilante groups, and residents whose timely information made the operation possible.
Bosso has directed investigators to conclude inquiries swiftly and ensure all those linked to the criminal plot are brought to justice. The police command reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led policing and collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders to combat crime across the state.
It also urged the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities, emphasizing that public cooperation is vital to enhancing security in Imo State.
