Manchester United’s pre-season campaign concluded with a 4-2 loss to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, on Saturday.
Michael Carrick’s team twice took the lead, courtesy of goals from Harry Maguire and Patrick Dorgu, but defensive lapses allowed Milan to strike back, scoring three close-range efforts before Ruben Loftus-Cheek added a fourth on the break, securing victory for former United boss Amorim against his old club.
The match featured Marcus Rashford’s first United appearance since returning from his loan at La Liga champions Barcelona.
Captain Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for the second consecutive friendly—after shooting wide against Leeds midweek, this time his effort was saved by Milan goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani, who dived to his right.
United had started brightly, with Fernandes providing the corner for Maguire’s powerful header to make it 1-0 in the second minute. Milan drew level soon after, capitalizing on a defensive error as Goncalo Ramos set up Samuel Chukwueze for a simple finish. Just before halftime, United were awarded a penalty when Koni De Winter pulled back Youri Tielemans, but Torriani denied Fernandes from the spot.
Dorgu restored United’s lead in the second half by pouncing on a loose backpass from Filippo Terracciano, but Milan quickly equalized when Alphadjo Cisse turned in Chukwueze’s wayward shot at the far post. Rashford, who had previously been sidelined by Amorim and sent on loan to Aston Villa before his stint in Spain, came on as a substitute on the hour mark.
Milan seized control in the 68th minute, with Ramos heading in Chukwueze’s cross, and just three minutes later, Loftus-Cheek raced clear to score Milan’s fourth. Amorim, who was dismissed as United manager in January after 14 months at the helm, saw his successor Carrick—now full-time boss—guide United to a respectable third-place finish last season after initially taking over as caretaker.
