According to prosecutors in Versailles, former France international, Djibril Cissé, and three others have been arrested in connection with a blackmail investigation involving a sex tape and his former teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
Cissé, who is currently without a club, was arrested at his home in the early hours of this morning and is being questioned by police. According to a source close to the case, the initial results of the investigation show that Cissé “acted in good faith and should be released from custody”.
Prosecutors said in a statement that the footballer is part of an ongoing investigation into a blackmail scheme cooked up by a group of wrongdoers who, if found guilty, face up to five years in prison. According to several media sources, the suspects tried to blackmail Valbuena into paying them money on the basis that they had a sex-tape featuring him.
Valbuena and Cissé played together at Olympique Marseille, the club where the Spaniard, currently at Lyon, had a stint between 2006 and 2008. Cissé, who spent two and a half seasons at the club between 2006 and 2008, was also Valbuena’s international teammate with France.
