The Action Alliance (AA) has amended its Constitution to extend the tenure of its National Chairman, Kenneth Udeze, and other national officers by two years to compensate for time lost due to internal conflicts and legal battles.
The decision was reached on Saturday at the party’s 5th National Convention in Abuja, where delegates unanimously approved the extension.
Why the Tenure Was Extended
The motion, moved by Calistus Andem from Akwa Ibom, cited the numerous court cases and factional crises that disrupted the party’s leadership for over two years. The amendment allows the current executives to serve until 2027, instead of stepping down in April 2025.
The party’s newly amended Constitution (Article 33a) now states that:
“All officers of the party at all levels elected pursuant to the provisions of this Constitution shall, unless suspended, removed, expelled, or on leave of absence, remain in office for a four-year term, with an option for re-election or an extension by the National Think Tank Committee.”
Mass Expulsion Over Anti-Party Activities
The party also expelled 23 former executive members, including Rufia Omoaje, for anti-party activities and sabotage. The decision, endorsed by delegates, aimed to protect the party’s core values.
Among those expelled are:
- Adekunle Omoaje
- Awofala Awoniyi
- Orgwu Miller
- Adewole Joshua
- Olu Omotosho
The party stressed that their actions threatened the party’s survival and undermined its vision.
Party’s Next Steps
The leadership under Udeze has been credited with making tremendous progress, and the extension aims to solidify the party’s stability. The next elective National Convention is now scheduled for 2027.
This move signals a fresh start for the Action Alliance, but whether it strengthens the party or sparks further controversy remains to be seen.
