Famed attorney Camille Vasquez expressed her gratitude to Johnny Depp for the opportunity to defend him in court against Amber Heard, his ex-wife and alleged batterer.
Vasquez was asked in a teaser clip before a sit-down interview by “CBS Mornings” host Gayle King why she believes the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor chose her specifically to participate in the widely reported defamation case.
“It was important to have a woman on the team,” the 38-year-old lawyer said, in part. “Why?” King asked. “This case called for a woman’s perspective,” Vasquez answered, “and I was the lucky person chosen to do this job.”
“Do you feel lucky? Is lucky the word?” King interrupted again. “I think so, yeah,” said Vasquez. “I think hard work and luck – you can’t underestimate there was a combination there. Of course, it’s a tremendous amount of hours, but it’s also a little bit of luck, and it’s not a job that I took lightly

The interview was conducted a week after Heard submitted an appeal motion against the jury’s decision, which favored Depp last month.
The Depp vs Heard trial aftermath for Camille
The seven jurors concluded that her claims that he physically abused her while they were dating defamed him. Although Virginia law caps punitive damages at $350,000, they gave the “Edward Scissorhands” actor $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in monetary penalties.
Throughout the trial, Vasquez rose to fame on her own. TikTok was initially persuaded that the young professional and the actor might have a romantic relationship, but her incisive questions during the cross-examination and commanding presence on behalf of her client soon cemented her place in history.
