Eliud Kipchoge becomes first athlete in history to run a marathon in under two hours

Eliud Kipchoge has become the first person in history to run a marathon in under two hours.

The Kenyan runner completed the INEOS Challenge event in Vienna in one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds.

This time won’t go down in the official record books because it wasn’t recorded in an official, competitive race.

Kipchoge, who holds the current world record time for a marathon at two hours, one minute and 39 seconds, was helped by a host of pacemakers during the race.

His final time of 1:59:40 means that it took him an average of 17.08 seconds for every 100 metres and a final average speed of 21 kilometres per hour.
