FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed support for FIFA’s decision to expel Club León from the 2025 Club World Cup after the team violated regulations regarding ownership conflicts. This decision stems from the fact that Club León is part of Grupo Pachuca, which FIFA deemed grounds for exclusion from the competition.
CAS to Make Final Decision
The ruling will be determined by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), with Infantino stating that a final decision should come by the end of April or early May. The Club World Cup 2025, scheduled for June 14 to July 13, will feature a new format with 32 teams, and Club León’s current exclusion has left 31 teams confirmed.
Potential Playoff Match Between LAFC and Club América
FIFA is reportedly considering a playoff match between LAFC and Club América to determine who will take León’s spot in the Club World Cup. This stems from León’s victory in the 2023 Champions Cup, where they defeated LAFC. However, Club América has clarified that they have not been contacted by FIFA about this potential match.
Infantino’s Statement on the Matter
Infantino highlighted that FIFA’s Appeals Committee has made the expulsion decision and emphasized that the matter will now be handled by CAS. FIFA is aiming to finalize all decisions quickly to ensure certainty and security for the participating teams.
