Germany start Flick era with an unconvincing win over Liechtenstein

Hansi Flick has started his reign as the new Germany national team head coach with a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein in their Group J World Cup qualifier.

It took the Germans until the 41st minute to find the breakthrough, however, doing so when Chelsea’s Timo Werner collected a fantastic pass from Jamal Musiala before finishing with his right foot.

It was a frustrating night for the home side and it wasn’t until well into the second half that they doubled their lead. Leroy Sane cut inside in the box and struck a powerful shot into the far corner to make it two.

Flick will be pleased with the three points and the fact they dominated possession, but less so with his side’s inability to turn their dominance over their rivals into more goals.

Germany now sit second in the group with nine points from four games, trailing Armenia by one, while Liechtenstein find themselves bottom with zero points.
