Gideon Okeke to FG: Abolish state of origin for national peace

Gideon Okeke, a Nigerian actor, has called on the federal government to abolish the extant “state of origin” in the country because of its damage to national development.

In a post on his social media page, the model and TV presenter wondered why such initiative would exist in a country that claims to be one.

The media personality said “state of origin” promotes divisions among the country’s different ethnic groups.

“Dear Nigeria…as a matter of federal/national character, I strongly believe we need to abolish ‘state of origin’” he wrote on Instagram.

It celebrates lines, borders, race, us vs them. Our strength is in our diversity. Yes. But it has taken so long to prove this right. Abolish ‘state of origin’ today for national peace.”

According to him, if the country is really serious about the “one Nigeria” narrative, it must rid the system of things that promote tribalism.

“One Nigeria! One Nigeria!! But we’re not quite willing to let go of the coattails of tribalism. Even ad commercials/radio jingles are culpable of passing subliminal messages that are nuanced in ways that make one wonder if there are:– 3 Nigerias, 187 others or just 1 Nigeria,” said the movie star.

He faulted the use of local expressions such as ‘Omo-Ibo’, ‘Ofemmanu’, Nyammiri’ among Nigerians, claiming those using them are either “racist or sold to bigotry.”

Okeke also called out police officers who are found of asking people “what state are you from?” during road checks.

The movie star said Nigeria should learn from Rwanda which also boasts of various ethnic nationalities.
