Governor Bago receives 100 freed Niger schoolchildren

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State on Monday received 100 abducted students of St. Mary’s Catholic Private Primary and Secondary School, Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State. less than 24 hours after their release was first made public.

Governor Bago received the children alongside other officials of Niger State Government at about 5:20 pm on Monday.

The children were convened in buses to Niger State Government House where they were received by the Governor and the other officials.

The children who were conveyed arrived at the Niger State Government House at about 5:20 pm and were received by Governor Bago and Niger government officials.

The students were abducted from the remote community on November 21 by gunmen who stormed their school around 2 am on motorbikes and operated for nearly three hours.

The school authorities said 303 students and 12 teachers were abducted by the gunmen.

However, About 50 pupils managed to escape within the first 24 hours and were reunited with their families.

Meanwhile, a United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has commended the Federal Government for the rescue of 100 schoolchildren.

Moore, a member of the House of Representatives, in a post on X on Monday, described the release of the children as a positive demonstration of President Bola Tinubu’s response to the country’s security challenges.

I want to thank the Nigerian government and @officialABAT for rescuing the 100 innocent and precious Catholic school children. This is a positive demonstration of the government’s increasing response to the security situation and shows commitment to the emergency declaration laid out by President Tinubu, his post read.

The US Congressman also noted that a joint task force has now been established between the state department and the Nigerian government to address the alleged Christian persecution in the country.
