Former Germany and Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has downplayed Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as England manager, claiming the Three Lions are no closer to winning the 2026 World Cup under the German than they were under Gareth Southgate.
Tuchel, who took charge after Southgate’s Euro 2024 final heartbreak, has already set his sights on winning the next World Cup. However, Lehmann remains unconvinced, citing Tuchel’s struggles at Bayern Munich.
“He’s Lucky to Get the Job” – Lehmann
Speaking on talkSPORT, Lehmann questioned Tuchel’s credentials:
🗣️ “For me, he is not a traitor. For me, he is very lucky to get such a great job. There must be a reason why he’s not with Bayern Munich anymore. It’s very difficult to get sacked by Bayern Munich. But we are happy for him that he’s the English coach now.”
Doubts Over Tuchel’s Impact on England’s Chances
Lehmann further suggested that Tuchel’s tactics at Bayern raise concerns about his ability to lead England to World Cup glory:
📌 “It doesn’t make England more likely to win anything, but it’s good for him.”
📌 “You have to look at Bayern Munich and how they played last season. Then you’ll see it. If you understand football, you’ll see it.”
England Begin New Era Under Tuchel
Tuchel’s first test as England manager comes this Friday when the Three Lions host Albania at Wembley, followed by a clash against Latvia on Monday as they kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
