Maiduguri bomb attacks leave 23 dead and 108 injured

The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that 23 people lost their lives and 108 others were injured after a series of explosions rocked Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

The blasts, which occurred around 7:24 p.m. on Monday, hit several locations including the Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover area.

Police Public Relations Officer Nahum Kenneth Daso, in a statement released on X, disclosed that initial investigations suggest the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices.

“Regrettably, twenty-three persons have been confirmed dead, while one hundred and eight others sustained various injuries,” the statement read.

In response to the attacks, police tactical teams, the military, and other security agencies were immediately deployed to the affected sites to restore calm. The areas were swiftly secured and cordoned off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit conducted thorough sweeps to eliminate any further threats.

Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid visited the scenes to oversee response efforts and offer condolences to the victims and their families. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, evacuated the injured to hospitals, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Authorities report that normalcy has returned to the affected areas, with security heightened across Maiduguri and its environs to deter further incidents.

Investigations are ongoing to fully uncover the circumstances of the attacks and apprehend those responsible. The police called on residents to stay calm but alert, and to promptly report any suspicious activity or objects to security agencies.

The Borno State Police Command also commended the resilience and cooperation of Maiduguri residents, assuring continued efforts to maintain peace and security in the state.
