The police in Anambra State have arrested one Hillary Apeh of Maryland Estate, Onitsha, for allegedly inflicting serious injuries on his nine-year-old niece, Chioma.
Apeh, it was gathered, had been assaulting Chioma for a while, which left scars on the victim’s body.
He, however, ran out of luck on Monday when neighbours intervened and reported the matter to the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
He said the command had commenced investigation into the matter with a view to bringing the suspect to justice.
Mohammed said the victim had been taken to hospital for treatment, while the suspect confessed to the crime.
The PPRO stated that Apeh confessed that he assaulted the victim because of her repeated refusal to run errands.
Mohammed said, “Around 10am, police operatives attached to the 3-3 Police Station, Onitsha, arrested one Hillary Apeh, 40, of Maryland Estate, 3-3 area, Onitsha.
“The suspect brutally assaulted his nine-year-old niece of the same address and inflicted several wounds on her body.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had on several occasions physically abused the victim, who has scars all over her body.
“The victim was taken to hospital for treatment, while the investigation is ongoing, after which the suspect will be brought to justice.”
