Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, has had his left leg amputated below the knee in an emergency operation.
The 81-year-old reportedly underwent a three-hour surgery on Wednesday in Cebu, Philippines, after doctors discovered a severe blood clot that caused his foot to turn blue and then black.
Speaking to Daily Mail, his son, Thomas Markle Jr, confirmed that his father was rushed to hospital on Tuesday after he suddenly became very ill at home.
My dad is being very brave, he said. I was told the leg had to be removed. It was a case of life or death.
Doctors placed the former Hollywood lighting director in intensive care after the procedure, where he remains in stable condition. However, medical staff say the next few days are crucial to monitor possible infection.
Thomas Markle has been living in the Philippines in recent years. He has been estranged from his daughter, the Duchess of Sussex, since her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.
