Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi says he hasn’t ruled out playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but he’s keeping his options open depending on how his body holds up.
The tournament, set to take place across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, will come as the football legend turns 38 years old, raising questions about whether he’ll go for one last dance on the world stage.
In a recent interview with Simplemente Futbol, Messi shared his mindset:
“I think about it and wait and see, but I don’t want to set that goal either. I’ll take it day by day and see how I feel physically, and be honest with myself.”
The Inter Miami star emphasized that 2024 will be a defining year in determining his fitness for the big stage. After a bumpy 2023 season with injuries, Messi says this year’s strong pre-season start has him feeling more optimistic.
“This year is going to be important to play with continuity, to feel good. Last year I missed a few games from injuries or not feeling 100%, but this time pre-season has been good, I feel good.”
Despite previously stating that Qatar 2022, where he finally lifted the World Cup trophy, would be his last, Messi has continued to play for Argentina. National team coach Lionel Scaloni and Inter Miami teammate and boss Javier Mascherano are among those hoping he pushes on to 2026.
For now, though, Messi is focused on club duties. He could suit up for Inter Miami against Columbus Crew this Saturday, with a Concacaf Champions Cup semi-final against Vancouver Whitecaps up next on April 24.
Whether or not he makes it to the 2026 World Cup, one thing’s clear Messi’s not done dreaming just yet.
