Mexico’s head coach Javier Aguirre has confirmed three guaranteed starters for El Tri’s Nations League semifinal clash against Canada on Thursday. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Aguirre revealed that Luis Ángel Malagón will start in goal, Jesús Gallardo will take his place at left-back, and Erik Lira will control the midfield.
However, the biggest selection debate remains in attack, as Aguirre refused to disclose whether Raúl Jiménez or Santiago Giménez would lead the line. While Mexico has rarely played with two strikers in recent years, Aguirre hinted that both could be involved.
“Of course, they can fit into the same system… Both are in good form, and both can start,” Aguirre said.
Defensive Adjustments
With César Montes suspended due to card accumulation, Aguirre emphasized that his replacement must be a defender who is:
✅ Strong in last-man situations
✅ Communicative
✅ Alert throughout the match
Quiñones in a Playmaker Role?
Aguirre also revealed his preference for Julián Quiñones to play behind a striker rather than as the main forward, suggesting that the Al-Qadsiah attacker could be in contention for a starting role.

➖ 1-1 (Draw)
❌ 1-2 (Loss)
✅ 2-1 (Win)

El Tri is currently winless in their last three encounters against Canada, a stat Aguirre is determined to change.
“We have to execute the game plan perfectly if we want to advance. Canada will fight, but if we play as we plan, we can move forward,” Aguirre assured.
