NBA legend and billionaire Michael Jordan may have dominated basketball courts, but one strict rule at an elite Miami golf club proved to be his undoing.
The six-time NBA champion, widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time, was permanently banned from La Gorce Country Club in 2012 after violating its rigid dress code.
What Happened?
Jordan, who boasts an estimated net worth of $3.5 billion (Forbes), has spent his post-basketball years indulging in other sports, including golf. However, during a round at La Gorce, he unknowingly broke a long-standing rule by wearing cargo shorts—a violation of the club’s strict dress code policy.
After playing 11 holes, club staff approached him and asked that he return to the clubhouse to change. Jordan, unwilling to disrupt his game, refused, leading to an immediate ban from the prestigious course.
His representatives later defended his actions:
“Michael Jordan did wear cargo pants. He had been there many times before and had never been made aware that he was violating any dress code. This time, he was made aware on the 12th hole, and he refused to interrupt his game. We were not aware he is now banned from La Gorce. I guess it’s their loss—MJ is a great golfer and a great guest.”
Not His First Dress Code Controversy
This isn’t the first time Jordan’s wardrobe choices have sparked controversy. During his NBA career, he was repeatedly fined $5,000 for violating the league’s strict uniform policy—specifically for wearing his iconic Nike ‘Air Jordan’ sneakers, which at the time were non-compliant with NBA regulations.
Despite his ban from La Gorce, Jordan remains an avid golfer and continues to play at some of the world’s most exclusive courses. And as history has shown, not even a lifetime ban can stop him.
