Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts has spoken out against online abuse after receiving a wave of “disgusting” messages following his controversial challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta in the FA Cup.
The Incident & Punishment
Roberts, 30, was sent off just eight minutes into the match at Selhurst Park after a reckless challenge left Mateta with a deep head injury requiring 25 stitches. Initially, referee Michael Oliver allowed play to continue, but after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, and Roberts was shown a straight red card.
Though the automatic punishment was a three-game suspension, the FA successfully appealed for a tougher sanction, extending Roberts’ ban to six matches. This means he will be unavailable until April 8, when Millwall takes on Sheffield United in the Championship.
Roberts Speaks Out
Following the incident, Roberts faced severe criticism online, with Millwall condemning the “disgusting abuse” directed at him. The goalkeeper has now addressed the situation, expressing deep regret while denying any malicious intent.
“I am devastated by what happened. I unequivocally accept the red card and my punishment. But it has been extremely unpleasant to see suggestions that I intended to harm a fellow professional. I have never stepped onto a football pitch with the intention of hurting anyone.”
He also revealed that he personally apologized to Mateta, who responded that evening to reassure him.
“Misleading articles and comments have led to an unthinkable amount of abusive messages and threats towards my family and me. To those who have supported me, thank you. Millwall’s togetherness is unique, and I can’t wait to be back on the pitch.”
Mateta’s Recovery & Palace’s Plans
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed that Mateta, the club’s top scorer with 12 Premier League goals, is expected to return after the international break. He will travel to Spain for a training camp next week as part of his recovery.
The Eagles will be without Mateta when they take on Ipswich Town this weekend in the Premier League.
