Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez KO’s Amir Khan in round six

Amir Khan’s dream of unique British boxing glory disappeared like a mirage into the Nevada desert and into the mists of semi-consciousness.

The skies outside the new T-Mobile Arena wept, perhaps partly with sympathy for a brave but fallen world middleweight title challenger from across the pond, on a strangely rain-swept night in Las Vegas.

The storm also swept away the notion that a two-time world light welterweight champion from Bolton could rise up to shock a middleweight as strong of body, forceful of mind and heavy of punch as Mexico’s heir to the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez took just under six rounds to come to terms to Khan’s lightning start, shudder him to the body, find his range to the head and then fell him with a blow of dynamite impact that it started somewhere near the ringside seats and detonated on his chin and not only sent him into a stupor but crashed his head against the canvas.

Referee Kenny Bayless had hardly begun counting when he waved his arms, first over the prostrate figure of Khan, then to summon medical assistance.
