A yet-to-be-identified woman allegedly jumped off the Third Mainland Bridge into the waters near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront, resulting in her death despite rescue attempts.
The incident took place around 4 p.m. on Thursday, prompting a swift response from marine police officers stationed in the area.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the details on Friday. He shared that although the marine police worked quickly to save her, medical personnel from the University of Lagos pronounced her dead upon arrival. Hundeyin reported that today, March 13, 2025, at about 1600 hours, an unidentified woman reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water near the UNILAG waterfront around 1500 hours.
She was recovered at the University of Lagos shore slipway by a team of marine police officers. Despite their efforts, she was confirmed dead by a team of medical doctors from UNILAG in the presence of officers from the Sabo Police Division.
He added that the deceased’s body has since been taken to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba for preservation. This tragic event has once again highlighted the importance of mental health awareness and the need for support in vulnerable situations.
