Transformer cable theft causes total blackout in Oke-Aro, residents cry for swift intervention

A devastating blackout has plunged some parts of Oke-Aro community again in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State after a yet to be identified individuals carted away vital transformer cables transmitting light to some parts of the community.

The incident, which occurred in the last week of August and first week of September, 2025, has left residents and businesses without electricity, causing widespread disruption in the area.

Confirming the incident to PMNEWS NIGERIA, some of the residents expressed frustration about the situation with speculations that residents may be asked to contribute their quota financially to replace the stolen cables before the electricity is restored back to the community.

The affected areas include major streets around Four Square and its surrounding neighborhoods: Moshood Ekun Road, Omolani Street, Oni Fadipe Street, Mocem Close, Pastor Victor Oduola Street, Otemuyi, among others.

Since the occurrence, residents have been struggling to cope with the power outage, with many businesses and commuters pleading for quick intervention from the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company, IKEDC.

Reacting, an eyewitness said, We need immediate action to address this issue. The frequent transformer problems are causing us inconvenience and affecting our economic activities.

This is not the first time the community has experienced a blackout, and we are demanding a more permanent solution.

According to a video made available to a social media platform and confirmed during PMNEWS NIGERIA’s visit to the affected areas, officials have neutralized the transformer to prevent further damage.

However, the timeline for restoring power remains uncertain. Community residents have been advised to report to the electricity distribution company’s office to facilitate the restoration process.

The lack of electricity has also raised concerns about security of government properties, as the area is already plagued by bad roads for decades coupled with other infrastructure challenges.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company, IKEDC.
