Arsenal fans were left scratching their heads after goalkeeper David Raya stepped onto the pitch in a bizarre kit combination during the Premier League clash against Brentford.
Raya, who was supposed to wear the club’s full lime green home goalkeeping kit, ended up mixing things up pairing the bright green jersey with black away shorts and socks. The confusion sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many wondering what went wrong.
A user on X, Roman AFC, asked:
“Why is David Raya dressed like that??”
Another, Mitch, added:
“What on earth is David Raya wearing? lol.”
Tom joined in:
“David Raya is sporting a pair of black away shorts today. Can anybody work out why?”
Well, it turns out there was a valid reason behind the unexpected switch. Brentford’s yellow socks were deemed too similar to Raya’s original lime green ones, potentially causing confusion on the pitch. So Arsenal’s kitman had to act fast, swapping the goalkeeper’s shorts and socks with the black away set just minutes before kickoff.
Despite the outfit drama, Raya’s performance wasn’t the biggest talking point of the match Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford, just days after a dominant 3-0 win over Real Madrid. Manager Mikel Arteta had rotated his squad heavily, clearly with one eye on the upcoming Champions League quarter-final second leg in Madrid on April 16.
Kit confusion aside, fans will be hoping the Gunners are dressed for success when it matters most in Europe.
