Belgium’s three years at the top of FIFA’s world rankings

This Monday marks three years since Belgium moved to the top of the FIFA world rankings, where they have stayed put.

After winning their last three international matches against Estonia, the Czech Republic, and Belarus, Belgium currently sits ahead of Brazil, England, France, Italy, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Mexico, and Denmark.

For his part, Roberto Martinez has reached 50 victories in 64 games with the Belgian national team to overtake Guy Thys, who led them to 49 wins in his two spells as Belgium coach (1976-1989 and 1990-1901).

In this three-year period where they’ve been topping the rankings, Belgium have participated in one major tournament, which was last summer’s European Championship, where they were eliminated by Italy in the quarter-finals.

Belgium are close to securing qualification to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and will also take part in the Nations League playoffs in October.
