The British press were in general agreement that Gareth Bale “took the night off” in Turin.
The Daily Mail quoted the damning words of Ireland’s Roy Keane, an ex-United legend and now commentator for ITV television, who assured that Bale “didn’t show up” and that “Real Madrid played the full 90 minutes a man down.
”
“Credit to both teams for going for it. It is very difficult when you are playing with 10 men as Gareth Bale did not show up. “I’m angry with him and I’m not even involved in the game. I’m fuming”, Keane raged.
Another commentator for the television channel, England’s Paul Scholes and another ex-United man, only had scathing words for the Welshman, while pointing out that Modric’s absence was a particularly tough blow for ‘Los Blancos’: “Modric was a big miss for them. Bale never once tried to take his man on. He just whipped the ball in and it was food and drink for Juventus’s defence.”
