Former West Ham and Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy was robbed at gunpoint at a barber shop in South Africa.
McCarthy’s agent told local radio that the 2004 Champions League-winning forward was targeted in the Johannesburg shop, where armed men stole jewelry from him.
Agent Percy Adams said other customers were ignored in the incident on Tuesday. He said one man pointed a gun at McCarthy’s face and demanded his watch, earrings and wedding ring. Adams told Eyewitness News that McCarthy was not hurt.
McCarthy is South Africa’s record scorer and played in Spain, Portugal, where he won the Champions League with Porto, and England. Earlier in the season, McCarthy was also helping out at Scottish side Hibs as he worked toward his coaching badges.
South Africa goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed in an apparent house robbery near Johannesburg last year. Police are still investigating his killing.
