WHAT HAPPENED?
Just a day after being handed a nine-month ban for a confrontation with a referee during Lyon’s clash with Brest, Paulo Fonseca managed his team to a 3-1 victory over FCSB in the Europa Conference League. The win was an emotional one, as Nicolas Tagliafico’s goal saw the entire squad rush to celebrate with their embattled manager.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Fonseca’s wife has slammed the ban as a “political execution,” and the Lyon boss himself has vowed to appeal the decision. His suspension prohibits him from being in the dugout or dressing room for Ligue 1 matches, but he remains determined to fight for what he believes is an unjust punishment.
WHAT FONSECA SAID
Speaking to reporters after the match, Fonseca maintained his innocence and criticized the severity of the punishment:
“I am ready. I will never give up. We have the possibility of appealing to obtain justice. I have the support of my president [John Textor].”
“I received a nine-month suspension for a situation for which I apologised. People keep saying I assaulted the referee, but the images are there—I never touched him. I only verbally confronted him. I had no intention of committing a physical assault.”
He further suggested that he is being used as an example:
“I think those who decided this sanction considered the general situation in French football. I am the one who has to pay. Other cases have been treated differently, and it is unfair.”
WHAT NEXT?
Lyon faces Nice in Ligue 1 on Sunday before traveling for the second leg against FCSB. However, Fonseca will be absent from the sidelines this weekend due to his suspension.
