Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has been hospitalised in the United States after falling ill with a severe case of gastroenteritis, the club announced on Thursday.
The French striker, who travelled with the team for the FIFA Club World Cup, was notably absent during Madrid’s 1–1 draw with Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal on Wednesday, prompting speculation over his condition.
In a short statement published on the club’s official website, Real Madrid confirmed Mbappé’s illness and revealed that he is undergoing medical evaluation.
Our player Kylian Mbappé is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment, the statement read.
Although the club did not specify when the 26-year-old forward would return to the squad, his absence is a significant blow to Madrid’s campaign, especially in a tournament where they are aiming to reinforce their dominance on the world stage.
