Barcelona midfielder Gavi is expected to be sidelined for up to five months after undergoing surgery on a knee injury, the club announced on Tuesday.
According to a statement from Barcelona, the 21-year-old Spain international had an arthroscopy to treat a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus. The club estimated his recovery period at four to five months.
Gavi, who previously suffered a torn cruciate ligament in the same knee in 2023, has not featured since August. Initially, Barcelona had hoped that conservative treatment would resolve the issue without the need for surgery, but the player ultimately went under the knife.
The injury rules him out until early 2026, raising concerns for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Spain are considered strong contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Barcelona face Real Oviedo in La Liga on Thursday before hosting Real Sociedad on Sunday, and then welcoming Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League next week, all without the presence of their influential midfielder.
