The Super Eagles kicked off their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Nigeria found themselves trailing in the 16th minute when Ehsan Kari headed home for Madagascar, beating goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
The Super Eagles struggled to create clear chances early on, though they forced a save from Madagascar’s Geordan Dupire in the 28th minute, and Wilfred Ndidi headed narrowly over a minute later.
Alex Iwobi appeared to have equalised for Nigeria in the 33rd minute, only for his effort to be ruled out due to a foul by Akor Adams on the goalkeeper.
The breakthrough finally arrived just before halftime, as debutant George Ilenikhena finished off an Iwobi pass to draw Nigeria level in the 45th minute.
After the break, Nigeria pressed forward with renewed attacking intent, registering 21 touches in Madagascar’s penalty area early in the second half, compared to just three for the visitors. Madagascar nearly reclaimed the lead in the 51st minute, but Nwabali was alert to deny Rayan Raveloson.
Coach Eric Chelle made tactical changes in the 61st minute, introducing Moses Usor and Moses Simon. Usor made an immediate impact, finding the net just minutes after coming on to give the Super Eagles the lead. Further substitutions saw Taiwo Awoniyi and Tolu Arokodare join the attack in the 69th minute.
Nigeria held firm in the closing stages, securing all three points to begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign on a winning note. The tournament is set to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
