Police debunk viral claim linking officer to militias in Taraba

The Taraba State Police Command on Sunday dismissed fast-spreading rumours that one of its officers was caught collaborating with militias in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, describing the allegations as false, misleading, and capable of inciting tension.

In a statement issued by the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah, the Command said online reports alleging the officer’s arrest over criminal associations were pure misinformation aimed at tarnishing the image of the Force.

According to the Command, the officer was at his legitimate duty post at Usmanu Outstation in Karim Lamido LGA when unrest broke out in the area. While residents reportedly fled for safety, the officer remained at his post and was later encountered by military operatives who arrived to stabilise the situation.

The police said preliminary findings showed the officer was not found with militias, weapons, or any incriminating items, and there is currently no evidence linking him to misconduct of any kind. The incident, however, is undergoing internal review to establish full clarity.

The Command, led by Commissioner of Police CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimeyin, said it would not tolerate attempts to discredit hardworking officers through baseless allegations, adding that legal action may be taken against individuals deliberately spreading disinformation.

Citizens were urged to rely solely on verified police channels for updates and to report suspicious activity promptly to security agencies.
