The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended four individuals suspected of drug dealing during a targeted operation in Okopedi, Eket Local Government Area. The arrests were confirmed on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, in a statement released to journalists in Uyo.
John revealed that the operation stemmed from intelligence-led raids ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, as part of ongoing efforts to crack down on criminal activities in Okopedi and Eket. On Saturday, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers acted on credible intelligence and raided a known hotspot, resulting in the arrest of four suspects, she stated.
During the raid, law enforcement recovered items commonly associated with the preparation and consumption of illicit drugs, including several empty Squadron bottles often linked to substance abuse. Additionally, quantities of crystal methamphetamine, popularly known as ice, were seized.
In a separate incident on Abia Uduk Street, Ikot Ebok, the Command’s surveillance team responded to reports of suspicious activity. When the police arrived, several suspects fled the scene. In their haste, one individual discarded a yellow nylon bag containing two locally made pistols and two live cartridges, John disclosed.
John emphasized that these operations underscore the Akwa Ibom Police Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security. She reiterated the Command’s resolve to rid the state of criminal elements by intensifying efforts against illegal firearms and drug abuse.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspects remain in custody while investigations continue. John also called on the public to provide helpful information to aid the ongoing fight against crime.
