Governor Amuneke discloses that party officials tried to bribe him with dollars to influence the content of anti-government skits

Comedian Kevin Chinedu, widely known as Kevinblak, recently shared that he was offered substantial sums in dollars by officials from a political party to alter his satirical skits, which often critique politicians and governance.

On Monday, during an interview on ARISEtv’s Arise 360 programme, Chinedu discussed the mounting pressures faced by content creators who use humour to hold public officials accountable.

He explained that the offer came at a particularly challenging time, shortly after his wife underwent a Caesarean section, and he was experiencing financial difficulties.

They told me they could change my life, that I was earning crumbs, and offered me dollars. They said my colleagues were already involved, he recalled.

Chinedu chose not to reveal the party’s identity, instead referencing his fictional character, Governor Amuneke, from his skits. He cautioned against attempts to identify the party, saying, Don’t mention names, trust me, don’t mention names.

Despite the tempting offer and his financial strain, the comedian refused to compromise his principles. He remembered how officials tried to entice him to Abuja by promising life-changing amounts of money.

I had a lot of bills, and they just told me, ‘Come to Abuja, let’s change your life. Dollars upon dollars, he said.

Ultimately, Chinedu stood his ground, guided by his personal code of integrity. I looked at it and said, No, I am who I am. I’ve been here for a long time, and I’ve never been involved in anything illegal or done anything because I was influenced by money. If I do something, it’s because I want to, not because I’m paid to, he said.

When asked if friends encouraged him to accept the offer, Chinedu explained that his close circle shared his values. I don’t have friends who are easily swayed by money. I have people with principles, because they’ve also been approached and refused. We always have that conversation, he said.
