Wahab Urges Lagos Residents: Observe May Sanitation, Stay Indoors, and Keep Your Environment Clean

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, has called on residents to stay indoors and actively participate in the May edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, scheduled for Saturday, May 30, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

In a statement released Thursday evening, Wahab applauded Lagosians for their strong turnout during the April resumption of the sanitation initiative, emphasizing that environmental cleanliness is vital for healthy living and sustainable development.

He encouraged residents to make full use of the two-hour window to clean their homes, drains, surroundings, and shared community spaces. The commissioner also commended the compliance levels observed in April and urged everyone to surpass previous participation levels, reiterating the state government’s commitment to continuing the monthly sanitation programme.

Wahab announced that Lagos State First Lady, Mrs. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, will lead a team of government officials monitoring the exercise in Alimosho Local Government Area, while the Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, will oversee activities in Apapa Local Government Area.

To ensure prompt waste removal during and after the exercise, Wahab disclosed that sufficient compactor trucks have been deployed across the state. He added that all 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas will be involved in monitoring to guarantee compliance and promote a cleaner Lagos.

The commissioner urged residents to embrace the sanitation initiative and foster a lasting culture of cleanliness, warning against living in dirty and unhygienic environments. He also cautioned against patronising cart pushers for waste disposal, describing the practice as illegal, and noted that Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators have expanded their services to reach more communities.

Wahab further warned that abatement notices will be issued to those who fail to clean their premises during the exercise, and defaulters may face prosecution. Reaffirming the government’s dedication to a clean, hygienic, and flood-free Lagos, he advised residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains and unauthorised locations.
